The Crowne Plaza San Diego is lessening its environmental impact through a variety of Green
Practices and state-of-the-art “green” equipment additions. In the many ways below, the daily
operations of
each department along with the commitment of our professional staff members
are helping keep the earth GREEN. |

Water Conservation
- Speakman low flow showerheads – Savings of 531,075 gallons per year compared to a
standard 3.0 GPM Shower head.
- Vorten low flow toilets – Savings of 86,880 gallons per year when compared to a standard 3.5
GPF toilet.
- Installed conductivity meters on our cooling towers to save water – Saving approximately
730,000 gallons per year at 5 cycles per day.
- Linen program in guestrooms helps to save water, electricity and natural gas. This program
removes 98,550 pounds of terry and linen per year from the laundry process.
- Water upon request program is utilized in all our F&B outlets.

Energy Conservation
- Installed a Solidine Energy Management system for public air conditioning system in meeting
rooms and admin offices which saves approximately 95,922 KWH per year
- Variable frequency drive saves power usage for production of chilled water HVAC system.
Saves approximately 41,600 KWH per year.
- Replaced 191 PTAC with more efficient units saving approximately 50,000 KWH per year.
- Compact Florescent Light bulbs and LEDS comprise 95% of hotel – Saving approximately
73,528 KWH per year. Also implemented a Florescent Lamp Recycling System utilizing
Mercury VaporLok Containers.
- Occupancy Sensor lighting is installed in public restrooms.
- Installed high efficiency dryers in laundry room saving approximately 25% on natural gas.
- High efficiency boilers that service guest rooms use approximately 25% less natural gas.

Waste Reduction Efforts.
- 2008 WRAP Award Winner – Waste Reduction Awards Program – Awarded through California
Integrated Waste Management Board, a subsidy of the California Environmental Protection
Agency.

We Recycle
- Clear and Colored Glass – 10 Tons
- Cardboard – 28 Tons
- Tin & Steel Cans & Containers – 2 Tons
- Aluminum Cans – 1 Ton
- Newspaper /Magazines/Yellow Pages – 7 Tons
- Plastic Containers/Bottles – 3 Tons
- Grass & Trimmings - 11 tons
- We donate approximately 500 pounds of electronics to Father Joe’s Homeless Shelter and St.
Vincent De Paul Center monthly.
- Recycle 250 gallons of cooking oil per year through New Leaf. New Leaf processes these oils
at their facility in Barrio Logan, San Diego into bio fuel.
- Donate 20 to 50 pounds of unused food product to Father Joe’s and St Vincent De Paul
monthly.
- Through our recycling efforts the Crowne Plaza San Diego Analgesia has diverted over 122 tons
of recycling/reusable material from the landfill in 2008. We strive to improve that diversion
amount in 2009.
- Yard clippings recycled through Edco Recycling. Approximately 20,900 lbs is kept from our
landfill. This Green only dumpster allows our landscape clippings to be turned into mulch
through Edco Waste Management System.
- Battery Recycling programs prevents over 2,000 batteries per year from going into our
landfills.

Clean Air Practices
- We clean all air handler units and coils annually and follow a preventative maintenance
schedule keeping records of all activity to provide clean quality air to our guests.
- Air 2500 Ionizers break down smoke residue to provide clean air in guestrooms. Additionally,
this system reduces quantity of chemicals sprayed into the air.

Other Efforts
- All printer and toner cartridges are recycled.
- Utilize used white paper as scrap paper in all departments
- All our company vehicles are maintained by San Diego Bus & Auto Repair to State Standards
every 45 days. San Diego Bus & Auto Repair properly disposes of hazardous oils, batteries,
tires and oil filters.
